Philip Alston

Philip G. Alston

Philip G. Alston (* 1950 in Australia ) is a professor at the New York University School of Law and an expert on international law and human rights.

Alston studied at the University of Melbourne and the University of California, Berkeley . In the 1980s he taught at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Harvard Law School . He then became a professor at the Australian National University . From 1996 to 2001 he was Professor of International Law at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence .

In 2011 he received an honorary doctorate from Maastricht University . The American Society for International Law made him an honorary member in 2017.

He has been the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights since 2014 .
