Philip Rosseter (* 1568, presumably in London ; † May 5, 1623 ibid) was a British composer and lutenist .

Life

In his youth, Rosseter was one of the Children of the Revels of the Queen . In 1604 he became a member of the royal chapel and worked there as court lutenist until his death .

On January 4, 1610, he and others were granted a patent making them Masters of the Children of the Queens Revels . Children of the Queen's Revels or Children of the Revels was a temporary name of the Children of the Chapel Royal, which was given to the group through the above patent . It was originally choirboys who supported the Chapel Royal before their voices broke. During the reigns of Elizabeth I and Jacob I, the ensemble developed into a children's theater company (see also Boy Actor ). Under Rosseter, they first played in the Whitefriars Theater . In 1612 the ensemble merged with The Elizabeth's Servants for a year . On June 3, 1615, Rosseter was granted a small seal for the construction of a theater in the Blackfriars district together with Philip Kingman, Robert Jones and Ralph Reeve . However, the resistance of the city leaders of London soon formed against another theater in the city and after several objections and proceedings the king decided on January 27, 1617 to withdraw his license; the Porter's Hall Theater was officially demolished shortly after it was almost completed. However, up until then it was occasionally used, e.g. a. with a premiere play by Nathan Fields . The Rosseters ensemble also disbanded.

During his lifetime he was friends with the poet and composer colleague Thomas Campion , for whose texts he wrote many ayres , of which he published two books - one in 1601, the other in 1609.
