Philipp Friedrich Beck

Philipp Friedrich Beck (born August 22, 1768 in Tübingen , † October 9, 1821 in Bern ) was a German pharmacist and chemist .

Life

Beck learned pharmacy in Christian Gottlieb Gmelin's pharmacy in Tübingen and was entered in the register of the University of Tübingen in 1790 . In 1800 he passed his pharmacy exam in Bern and in 1804 acquired citizenship in Murten . He worked under the pharmacist SF Benteli in the Bern pharmacy and then leased the Wagner pharmacy “next to Pfistern”.

In the winter semester of 1807/1808 he was a lecturer in pharmaceutical chemistry at the Academy in Bern and in 1813, after the death of Professor JH Beck, Professor of Chemistry and Pharmacy. As a lecturer at the Bernese Academy, he gave the first official lecture in theoretical pharmacy and formulation. The textbooks by Karl Gottfried Hagen and Sigismund Friedrich Hermbstädt served as the basis for his lecture.

While he was working in Benteli’s pharmacy, he designed hydrometers with scales and gravimeters for solids according to the description of Guyton at Benteli’s suggestion . He was a specialist in this field and his hydrometers spread across Europe .
