Philipp Gilbert Hamerton (born September 10, 1834 in Laneside near Shaw and Crompton , Greater Manchester , ( Lancashire ), † November 4, 1894 in Boulogne-sur-Mer ) was an English painter, etcher and writer.

Hamerton devoted himself to painting in London, especially the landscape, lived since 1857 at Loch Awe (lake in the Scottish county of Argyll) in the Scottish highlands, which he glorified through verses and sketches, but moved to France in 1861, only in Sens to stay later in Autun . He has shown himself to be a prolific writer in the field of art history, novels, and youth writings.
