Philipp Rellstab

Philipp Rellstab (born January 28, 1984 in Zurich ) is a Danish - Swiss jazz musician (including trumpet , flugelhorn and trombone ), band leader , composer and arranger .

Musical career

The son of a Dane grew up near Zurich in Switzerland. He came into contact with a broad spectrum of jazz at an early age through his grandfather's records.

Even as a child, Rellstab stood out for his musical talent and played in various school orchestras and youth bands. First he trained on the trombone and then on the tuba . Already at this time he discovered his love for the trumpet and lived it out, initially self-taught. The training on the trumpet took place with the Swiss jazz musician and conductor Erwin Füchslin . In various instrumental courses, etc. a. Philipp Rellstab refined his tuba playing with Simon Styles , Sam Pilafian and Roger Bobo and made a name for himself in the local scene as a jazz tuba player. After training on the trumpet and over the past few years, the trumpet and flugelhorn replaced the tuba.

Between 1995 and 2008 Rellstab was a member of various orchestras, including the Grenadiermusik Zürich and the Wood and Metal Connection. He composed marches , a cappella programs as well as countless arrangements of existing melodies for wind orchestra. Since the mid-2000s, the field of composition and arrangement in the field of jazz and symphonic wind music has become increasingly important.

From 2010, after old-time jazz and swing , Rellstab increasingly turned to smooth jazz , which is also listed under Easy Listening , and met the contemporary trend in jazz. In this context he also concentrated more on the flugelhorn and the valve trombone . He often appears as a guest musician and soloist in national and international jazz orchestras and played with greats like Dusko Goykovich .
