Philipp Schmitz

Philipp Schmitz SJ (born November 22, 1935 in Cologne ; † August 29, 2015 there ) was a German moral theologian.

Life

Philipp Schmitz first began studying law, but joined the Jesuit religious order in 1957 . He studied theology and philosophy at its own universities. In 1970 he was trained at the Roman Gregoriana with the moral theological work “Grasp Reality. For the inductive standardization of a 'new morality' ”to the Dr. theol. PhD . In 1975 he completed his habilitation in Sankt Georgen with the work “Freedom in the norm. Moral theological reflection on finding norms ".

From 1975 to 1996, Philipp Schmitz held the chair of moral theology at the Philosophical-Theological University of Sankt Georgen in Frankfurt am Main . From 1996 until his retirement in 2008 he taught moral theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He had his retirement home in the Jesuit community in Cologne .

He has held multiple guest residencies and professorships at the US universities in Yale, San Francisco and Berkeley as well as in Kyoto, Japan, and Manila, the Philippines, as well as in India.
