Philipp Vassel

Philipp Vassel (born August 26, 1873 in Berlin , † December 19, 1951 in Bünde ) was a German diplomat.

Life

Philipp Vassel was born in Berlin on August 26, 1873. Vassel studied Oriental Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin. He completed his studies in 1894 with a thesis on the Arabic language. As a second degree, he completed a law degree. Vassel was fluent in Latin, Greek, English and French as well as Arabic in twelve dialects. He also spoke Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Russian and Polish. He received his doctorate on March 30, 1896.

After completing his doctorate, he joined the diplomatic service of the Federal Foreign Office. His first position took him on 29 June 1896 as consul to Tangier in Morocco and on 4 April 1897 send to Casablanca . From 1911 to 1912 he represented Germany in the Franco-German negotiations on Casablanca in Bern .

During the First World War , Vassel was envoy to the Iranian government in Kermanshah in 1916 . There was a "provisional Iranian government" supported by the German Reich under the leadership of Reza Qoli Khan Nezam al Saltaneh .

From 1919 to 1921 Vassel was sent as consul to Arnhem in the Netherlands , from 1921 to 1923 to Galatz in Romania and from 1923 to 1925 to Odessa in the Soviet Union . From 1926 until 1928 he worked at the consulate in Poznan in Poland . In 1928 he was posted to the consulate in Smyrna , Turkey .

During the Second World War he took over the post of Consul General from 1941 to 1944 in Paris, which was occupied by the German troops. In Paris he headed the German international radio service for North Africa and the Middle East.

Philipp Vassel was prematurely retired in 1944 due to illness. He died on December 19, 1951 in Bünde in Westphalia.

Philipp Vassel was married to Anna Elisabeth Hermine Scheuch. The marriage resulted in a daughter and two sons.
