Fra ' Philipp von Colloredo-Mels , also Filippo di Colloredo-Mels (born November 29, 1779 in Udine , Republic of Venice , † October 9, 1864 in Recanati , Kingdom of Italy ) was an Italian nobleman and knight of the 1st class of the Sovereign Order of Malta . biography

Philipp von Colloredo-Mels came from the noble family Colloredo-Waldsee-Mels , who came from Friuli , and was the son of Hieronymus von Colloredo-Mels, Marchese di Santa Sofia e Recenati and his wife Maria Antonia von Colloredo-Waldsee-Mels.

He was accepted into the Order of Malta at the age of one, made perpetual vows in 1840 and thus became a professed knight and monk in the sense of canon law.

Later Philipp von Colloredo was Profess-Ehren- and Devotions-Großkreuz-Bailli. He led the order from 1845 until his death as governor (lieutenant) in place of a grand master ; The headquarters had been in Rome since 1834 . Colloredo-Mels made great contributions to the consolidation of the Order of Malta and began to establish it again on an international level. He also had the procedure for the election of future grandmasters reorganized.

The governor died in his home town of Recanati in 1864, where he usually spent the summer. Alessandro Borgia (1783–1872) was elected as his successor.
