Pierre-Philippe-André Levêque de Vilmorin (born November 30, 1776 , † March 21, 1862 in Verrières-le-Buisson ), also known as Philippe André de Vilmorin, was a French horticulturist and dendrologist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " A.Vilm. ".

Life

Vilmorin was the eldest son of Philip Victory Leveque de Vilmorin (1746–1804), royal grain merchant and founder of a commercial horticultural company. He studied at Pontlevoy University and later in Paris and became director of the company after the death of his father. His travels to England in 1810, 1814 and 1816 enabled him to discover British advances in crops for horticulture and agriculture. This increased his interest in cereals, vegetables, forest plant species, ornamental plants and plants of exotic origin. The " Horticultural Society of London " awarded him a medal in 1814 for his numerous articles on the subject.

In 1815 he founded the company Vilmorin Vilmorin-Andrieux & Cie , which later developed into one of the largest suppliers of seeds in the world. In Verrières-le-Buisson he acquired the property of a previous hunting ground that belonged to Louis XIV , where he developed the Vilmorin Arboretum . In 1821 he acquired the Domaine des Barres (283 hectares), where he planted an experimental forest that made it possible to study pines and oaks . As part of the estate, it became the Arboretum national des Barres in 1873 . Vilmorin died in this place on March 21, 1862.

Since 1844 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .

He was the father of Louis de Vilmorin . One of his descendants (his grandson), Henry de Vilmorin (1843–1899), founded the horticultural company Empel on Cap d'Antibes in 1886.

The Arboretum de Pézanin was founded in 1903 by the botanist Philippe Lévêque Vilmorin (1872-1917) on the site of the Château d'Audour .
