Philippe Ghis (born December 1, 1882 in Rennes , † June 3, 1918 in Fresnoy-la-Rivière ) was a French football player , track and field athlete and co-founder of the Rennes club .

Life

Ghis began his professional career as a financial administrator and then moved to the administration of the Ille-et-Vilaine department , based in his hometown of Rennes. Then he worked as a civil servant in the social welfare office. In March 1901 he was one of those people who founded the Stade Rennes football club, which later became a long-time member of the French premier league. In the following time he was in the position of right winger part of the historically first team that took up for the club. In 1904, however, he gave up playing football in order to concentrate on his activities as a track and field athlete.

Already in 1902 Ghis had become the Breton champion in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:40 minutes. He was able to repeat this success in both 1904 and 1905. In the following years he took on responsibility as a sports official and became secretary of the Stade Rennes, which he co-founded, and a member of the Breton committee of the USFSA sports association . In the First World War he was drafted into the military, took part in the fighting and died at the age of 35 on June 3, 1918 in the Oise department .
