Philippe Martinez

Philippe Martinez (born April 1, 1961 in Suresnes on the western outskirts of Paris ) is a French trade unionist and has been General Secretary of the Confédération générale du travail (CGT) trade union since February 3, 2015 .

Life

Martinez is a son of Spanish immigrants . He spent his school days in Rueil-Malmaison .

He became Technicien de la métallurgie (about: metallurgy technician) and from 1982 worked at the Renault plant in Boulogne-Billancourt . There he was délégué central of the CGT. He was a long time activist in the French Communist Party ; In 2002 he resigned from the party.

In February 2008 he became general secretary of the Fédération des travailleurs de la métallurgie (FTM-CGT) of the CGT, the third largest branch of the CGT with 60,000 members at the time.

2013 he was appointed to the commission exécutive chosen the CGT.

In January 2015 it became apparent that he would succeed Thierry Lepaon; until then he was little known to the general public.

The CGT started strikes in May 2016. Martinez apparently wants to force the withdrawal of a labor market reform bill; On May 24th he called for a “generalization of the strike, everywhere, in all factories”.
