Location and description

History and use

The Philippenhöhle was probably settled for the first time by people of the leaf tip group in the period between 50,000 and 35,000 BC. The evidence is the finding of a leaf tip fragment in a layer of soil on the forecourt of the cave. In this early phase of use, the Philippenhöhle may only have served as a resting place for wandering hunters and gatherers . Small remains indicate that the cave was also used in the Bronze Age . From the Hallstatt period , around 1300 to 500 BC. Chr., Ceramic shards were found in the cave, which indicate a longer permanent settlement. Smaller finds have also shown that the cave was used in the Middle Ages . A scientific investigation of the cave in 1916 showed that its intensive use over several epochs and earlier excavations largely destroyed the layers of finds and traces of the respective earlier epochs.
