Philo Ikonya (2012)

Philo Ikonya (* 1959 ) is a Kenyan writer, journalist and human rights activist. She has lived in exile in Oslo since 2009 .

Live and act

Philo Ikonya studied literature at the University of Nairobi and completed her studies with a master's degree.

Ikonya has taught semiotics at Tangaza College of the Catholic University of East Africa and Spanish at the United States International University Africa and has worked as a commentator on political and social issues on radio and television in Kenya. She also wrote articles about the situation in her country in magazines, online magazines and blogs.

She is the Chair of the Kenyan PEN Center .

Because of her political commitment, she was threatened and harassed in Kenya, making it impossible to work there. Since 2009 she has been living as a guest author for the International Cities of Refuge Network (ICORN) in the Norwegian capital, Oslo .

As a writer she is the author of several novels and volumes of poetry. The volume of poetry Aus dem Prison (2010) and the novel Eine nächtlicheführung (2012) have been published in German translation .
