Helmuth A. Niederle (born November 16, 1949 in Vienna ) is an Austrian writer, translator and editor.

Life

Helmuth A. Niederle studied ethnology, folklore, art history and sociologist at the University of Vienna , was a research assistant at the Austrian Society for Literature from 1974 and from 1994 until the end of 2011 its deputy head and responsible for program coordination, from 2003 university lecturer at the Institute for Ethnology, Culture - and social anthropology at the University of Vienna. In all the years during his professional activity in the literary society, he worked for various print media in various functions, including for "Kurier", "Die Furche", "Wochenpresse" and "Entwicklungspolitische Nachrichten". The area of ​​activity included own journalistic work as well as final editing. Furthermore, articles on fine arts, literature, socio-political issues and discussions about the difficulties have appeared in “Der Standard” and a number of literary and cultural magazines (including “Pannonia”, “Morgen”, “Die Brücke”, “Literature and Criticism”) of intercultural dialogue. Publications on ORF .

As a student and afterwards he had several study visits and field research in Indonesia, the Philippines, India, South Africa, Sierra Leone and Nagaland, among others. Since 1998 he has been the initiator and co-organizer of a series of symposia devoted to the topic of “Literature and Migration”. These thematically linked conferences were jointly carried out by the Institute for Ethnology, Cultural and Social Anthropology of the University of Vienna and the Austrian Society for Literature together with partner organizations corresponding to the topic. The priorities up to now have been dedicated to “Islam”, “Africa”, “South America”, “South Asia” and “South Africa”.

Since the summer semester 2003 he has been a university lecturer at the Institute for Ethnology, Cultural and Social Anthropology at the University of Vienna. From 2000 to 2013 he was the representative of the Writers in Prison Committee of the Austrian PEN Club and has been President of the Austrian PEN Club since 2011 .

For several years he was the editor of the series “skriptor mundi”, which appeared in the “edition Kappa” (Munich); since 2006 he has been the editor of the "Edition Milo" series published by Verlag Lehner (Vienna) and since 2008 by Drava Verlag (Klagenfurt); as well as publisher of the “hic & hoc” series in plattform Johannes Martinek Verlag; since 2011 development of the "edition pen" series at Löcker Verlag Vienna.

He lives in Streifing in the Weinviertel and in Vienna.
