Heinz Stangl (born December 19, 1942 in Vienna ; † March 10, 2008 ibid) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist .

Live and act

Heinz Stangl studied from 1961 to 1967 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where Maximilian Melcher was one of his teachers. He began his career in the environment of the Viennese dreamers who were close to Surrealism . In the years that followed, he developed a freer, independent expression, which, due to the strong colors and the large figures, especially in his oil paintings, was often certified as having a sensual quality. The sometimes garish eroticism and the contrasting morbid everyday situations of his works consciously accepted to provoke the audience. As a book illustrator , he furnished several works by Wolfgang Bittner and Peter Marginter .

His first exhibition in 1963 was followed by numerous other exhibitions in Austria and abroad. In 2004 Stangl took part in the major exhibition Hommage à Picasso in Vienna. He was a member of the Vienna Secession , where he also served on the board for years.

Heinz Stangl has received awards from the City of Vienna, the Körnerpreis and the Austrian State Scholarship.
