life and work

Hermann Härtel grew up in Klosterneuburg near Vienna . His grandfather was a cartographer in monarchical Austria, his father was a skilled model maker. The grandfather was a colleague of Franz Karl Ginzkey , who not only wrote the Lower Austrian national anthem , but also wrote the children's book Hatschi Bratschis Luftballon (1904). There were also visits to the Vienna Technical Museum with his planes from Lilienthal and Etrich. He was also strongly influenced by Heimito von Doderer's novels The Strudlhofstiege and The Incarnation of the Amtsrat Julius Zihal .

In 1967/1968 at the University of Applied Arts Vienna , he initially devoted himself to studying painterly and plastic forms with Herbert Tasquil . From 1968 to 1972 he was a student in Wolfgang Hutter's master class . In 1972 he completed his studies with the title Magister artium . He is a member of the Künstlerhaus Wien.

In 1977 he took part in a balloon ride in Bad Vöslau with Josef Starkbaum . This experience became the basis for much of his work. Since then, Härtel has illustrated the book Hatschi Bratschis Luftballon by Franz Karl Ginzkey several times . Aviation pioneers such as Leonardo da Vinci , Gustav Weißkopf , Igo Etrich or Otto Lilienthal and Charles Lindbergh inspired him to do some of his aeronautical work. The flight of birds, aviation encounters, etc. the like leads to nautical and aeronautical apperceptions that initially manifest themselves in objects and only later become drawings and paintings.

Aeronautical flying object by Hermann Härtel

From his cartographic and aeronautical occupation, Härtel developed not only graphics and painting, but also flying objects. Their basic construction and carrier are mostly shaped CU wires, which are covered with various papers like a collage. Since Härtel owns the archive of the two- wheeled world traveler Gustav Sztavjanik (1907-1944), he followed his footsteps from 1924 to 1931 on an imaginary two-wheel drive that resulted in many artistic objects.

Before that, many works were created in different graphic techniques and a wide range of Lower Austrian landscapes, for example from a bird's eye view, as well as exact vedute of sights from Vienna and the surrounding area. Due to the collapse of the graphics market and a lack of collectors, he almost had to end this field of activity in order to finally make his graphic talent available to book illustration, which is a main component of his oeuvre. The graphics and the graphic portfolios once made Härtel known to the Austrian public.

Watercolor by Hermann Härtel from the cycle "Die Winterreise"

Since his exhibition in Scheuchenstein in 2019, he has also used mixed techniques to create images of the sky with towering clouds, probably as an homage to the Austrian painter Friedrich Gauermann. Today he mostly deals with literary material, which he either illustrates or completely reinterprets. For example, Wilhelm Müller's The Beautiful Miller or Die Winterreise , Joseph von Eichendorff Christmas or moon , Theodor Fontane's John Maynard , Emmanuel Geibel There must be spring and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Easter walk from Faust .
