Scheuchenstein castle ruins

Remains of the castle ruins

The ruin of the hilltop castle is on an isolated rock cone east of the village. Access was via a narrow ledge directly below the tower on the northwest side, at the end of which a ladder led up to the tower entrance. Unfortunately, tourists and unauthorized persons are not allowed to enter, as the castle ruins no longer meet security requirements.

The castle was probably built by order of the Styrian rulers towards the end of the 12th century. It was first mentioned in documents in 1260. 1304 appears as the first Scheuchensteiner an "Ulrich" in a Heiligenkreuzer document. In the course of the dispute between the brothers Kaiser Friedrich III. and Archduke Albrecht VI. the castle was conquered in 1463/64 and the Scheuchensteiners expelled. Either during the fighting against the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus (around 1480) or during the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529 , the castle was destroyed and then largely torn down over time. The Scheuchenstein lordship came into the possession of the Heussenstein family in 1577 and that of the Hoyos (Gutenstein) in 1632 .

Parish church

The parish church

The parish church, which is consecrated to St. Rupert of Salzburg , is located in the center of the village in a slightly elevated position and is surrounded by the cemetery and a wall. The core is Romanesque , the oldest parts of the wall date from the middle of the 13th century (in the south wall of the nave). Around 1770 the church was rebuilt and expanded in the baroque style.

Parish history

Around 1300 Scheuchenstein belonged to the Waidmannsfeld parish . Scheuchenstein was mentioned in a document in 1342 as a parish, it was abolished in 1579 and rebuilt in 1783 as part of the Josephine reforms and has been under the Archdiocese of Vienna since 1785 .

Gauermann Museum

The former elementary school and current Gauermann Museum

Since 1976 the Gauermann Museum has been set up in the two-storey building, which was built as a primary school in 1912 and functioned as the "Gauermann School" from 1963. It has two exhibition areas that are accessible on weekends and public holidays. Works of art by Friedrich Gauermann are located on the ground floor and works by contemporary artists are alternately presented on the first floor of the museum.

Gauermannhof

The Gauermannhof (Scheuchenstein No. 71) is the birthplace of Friedrich Gauermann and is located about 0.5 km southwest of the town center. It is essentially from the 18th and 19th centuries. The four-sided, irregular courtyard system dates back to the 19th century, with the farm wing dating from the middle of the 20th century. The Gauermannhof is part of the four-kilometer Gauermann circular hiking trail, which was opened in 1999.
