Josef Starkbaum

Josef "Joschi" Starkbaum (born March 22, 1934 in Brno ) is an Austrian balloonist and pilot.

Life

Josef Starkbaum, who was a civilian pilot at Austrian Airlines , set several records in ballooning. In 1983 he set an altitude record of 13,670 m without a pressure suit and without a pressure cabin. He even beat his own record in 1998 with 15,360 m. Starkbaum has been in numerous races, he and Gert Scholz won the Gordon Bennett Cup seven times and is one of the drivers with the most victories in these competitions. In 1992 he won the World Balloon Championship with Gert Scholz.

He has also been a member of the Austrian Aeroclub for over 30 years .

  • 1987 - Decoration of Honor in Gold (ÖAeC)
  • 1990 - Gold medal for sports from the Lower Austrian provincial government
  • 1995 - The world's first Sporting Badge in gold with three diamonds (FAI / CIA)
  • 1998 - Montgolfier Ballooning Diploma (contribution to the sports, FAI / CIA)
  • 2003 - Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria
  • 2008 - Merit Award for Special Achievements in Sports Aviation (ÖAeC)

In 2008, Starkbaum was inducted into the FAI / CIA Hall of Fame by the FAI , the International Aeronautical Association.
