Chung Ji-young (also Jeong Ji-yeong ; born November 19, 1946 in Cheongju , North Chungcheong ) is a South Korean film director and screenwriter . He was one of the most influential people in South Korean cinema in the late 1990s .

Life

Chung is a graduate of Korea University . After graduating, he worked as an assistant director to Kim Su-yong . Chung made his directorial debut in 1982 with the mystery film Mist Whispers Like Women ( 안개 는 여자 처럼 속삭인다 ). His heyday began when he distanced himself from melodramas and thrillers and instead made serious and reality-based films such as North Korean Partisan in South Korea (1989) and White Badge (1992) and Life and Death of the Hollywood Kid (1994).

From 1998, the year Chung released Naked Being , until the premiere of his film Unbowed at the 2011 Busan International Film Festival , Chung took a break from directing. Unbowed turned out to be a huge hit for Chung. The film is about corruption in the judicial system and is based on a real incident. Unbowed received positive reviews, reached 3.4 million moviegoers in South Korea and won the Paeksang Arts Award for best film . Chung also received the Blue Dragon Award for Best Director for the film .

He also released the film National Security in 2012 , based on the events surrounding democracy activist Kim Geun-tae , who was tortured under the Chun Doo-hwan's regime . This makes Chung a specialist in filming real cases. In 2019 he continued this with the financial thriller Black Money , in which Cho Jin-woong and Lee Ha-nee play the leading roles.

Since 2016 he has been chairman of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival .
