Kim Geun-tae (born February 14, 1947 in Bucheon , † December 30, 2011 in Seoul ) was a South Korean politician . In the meantime, he was chairman of the Yeollin-uri party ( 열린 우리당 , Yeollin-uri-dang, Our Open Party), which ruled South Korea between 2004 and 2007, and was Minister of Health from 2004 to 2006. Kim was a member of the South Korean National Assembly from 1996 until his death . In 1987 he and his wife In Jae-keun received the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award . He was the father of a son and a daughter.

Life

Kim Geun-tae was born on February 14, 1947 in Bucheon ( Gyeonggi-do ). From 1968 he studied at Seoul National University and received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1972 . In 1983 he founded the organization Mincheongryeon ( 민청련 ), which campaigned against the dictatorship and for the democratization of South Korea. As a result, he was arrested in 1985 and tortured for over 3 weeks .

Kim died on December 30, 2011 of complications from a brain disease.
