Founded phronesis 1955 by the Greek scholars Donald James Allan ( University of Glasgow ) and Joseph Bright Skemp (University of Durham). As Allan and Skemp pointed out in the preface to the first issue, one of the goals of the magazine was to bridge the gap between philosophical historians and classical scholars. Another concern was the consideration of the survival of ancient thought in the Middle Ages. From 1965 to 1967 David Mowbray Balme (London) and Günther Patzig (Göttingen) headed the magazine. Subsequent editors were David J. Furley (1968–1972), George B. Kerferd (1973–1979), Jonathan Barnes (1980–1987), Malcolm Schofield (1988–1992), Robert W. Sharples (1993–1997), Keimpe Algra and Christopher Rowe (1998–2003) and Verity Harte (2004–2011). George Boys-Stones has been publishing Phronesis since 2012 .
