Phusion Passenger (informally also known as mod_rails and mod_rack ) is a module for the Apache HTTP Server and nginx for providing Ruby web applications that comply with the rack interface , especially for Ruby-on-Rails applications as well as Python and Node.js web applications. The module replaced mod ruby . It is available as a Gem package and is supported on Unix -like systems such as Unix and Linux .

Phusion Passenger was at times recommended by the Ruby on Rails developers as the preferred method for deploying Ruby on Rails applications. A 2009 survey on Rails hosting with 1215 respondents showed that Phusion Passenger and Mongrel are almost exclusively used to deploy Rails applications on production systems, with Phusion Passenger being used somewhat more frequently. A database for measuring the popularity and activity of Ruby libraries cites Puma and Unicorn as similarly popular and supported alternatives.

Combined with Ruby Enterprise Edition , the memory requirements for Rails applications can be reduced by around 30% while improving performance.

Outside of productive use during development, the WEBrick delivered with Ruby is often used instead of Phusion Passenger .
