In the PhysikClub Kassel , founded in 2002 , now a student research center in North Hesse at the University of Kassel at the Albert-Schweitzer-Schule, an institution of the children's and youth academy of the Volkshochschule in Kassel , young people from grade five through to high school graduate research into problems of science . The main focus of the students is on the fields of physics , astrophysics, geophysics, chemistry, biology and technology. At the beginning of 2016, 300 students from 20 schools in North Hesse are working on almost 50 projects (69 of them in grades five to seven and 104 from grades eight to thirteen). 25 supervisors, mainly students, but also trainee teachers, teachers and physicists, support the teams in their work. The initiator and leader of the physics club is Klaus-Peter Haupt, teacher at the Albert Schweitzer School in Kassel and seminar leader for the training of physics teachers in North Hesse.

Student Research Center North Hesse (SFN)

On December 5, 2007, the pilot project “Student Research Center” was started. According to the model of the club, students from North Hesse carry out independent research projects in many natural sciences, mathematics and technology as well as computer science. Originally, the new building should be started by the University of Kassel on the grounds of the Albert Schweitzer School in summer 2009. The foundation stone was only laid in May 2011. The building, which has already received an award for innovative architecture, opened in June 2012.

The building owner of the approx. 3.2 million euro building is the University of Kassel , which finances the building in particular from funds from the university investment program Heureka of the state of Hesse. The building is open to all North Hessian students for their own research activities across the entire MINT spectrum. They are to be supported by two additional teaching positions and accompanying university research. The new building is a free-standing building with an area of approx. 1400 m², including a large multifunctional room (this can be divided into two smaller rooms by sliding wall), a technical room with 3D printers and vacuum chamber, workshop with soldering station, lathe and two milling machines, full equipped chemistry laboratory, biology work room, electron microscope, darkroom, sound laboratory and the observatory with a retractable roof and three telescopes. There is also a kitchen and a relaxation room on the upper floor, where there is also a roof terrace. The building has an elevator and is completely barrier-free. The infrastructure of the Albert Schweitzer School (cafeteria, other classrooms) is also included.

The students work either in groups or individually. They usually support each other and receive professional advice from teachers, trainee teachers, students and scientists. The research projects last at least one year and are usually presented to the public in an annual presentation (e.g. MINT congress, youth research). Aspects of teacher training are discussed in the student research center and conveyed in a practice-oriented manner. The work in the student research center is new didactic and methodological territory in many ways. Accompanying research projects investigate and a. a possibility to change the regular school lessons. The already close cooperation between the natural science institutes of the university and the physics club will be further strengthened in the student research center.

The physics club is open to all students in grades five to 13 (if the G8 system is being phased out: up to grade 12); no selection is made based on performance or project success.

Workshops

Workshop navigation on the Regina Maris

Every year, the Physics Club and the Astronomical Working Group in Kassel organize a workshop in which young people and adults independently familiarize themselves with a current field of natural sciences. The topics were: Astronomy in a mountain hut (2002), Evolutionary systems (2004), What is time? (2005), The World of Quanta (2006), Navigation (2007), Geo- and Astrophysics (2008) and Cosmic Sounds (2010). The last workshop took place in October 2016 in the south of France.

Support association

Since September 2008, the “Friends of the North Hesse School Research Center of the University of Kassel” has been a registered association. The task set out in the statutes of the association is the financial and personal support of the physics club / student research center. The work in the physics club continues to be supported by sponsors. The goals of the SFN's friends' association are to create a free and high-quality working environment for the students. Through donations or a membership in the development association, students, parents, alumni, companies and others who care about the well-being of the student research center can make a contribution. Since the association is recognized as a non-profit organization, donation receipts for donations can be issued to the tax office. Membership in the friends' association also supports the work of the SFN.
