Phytocoris insignis is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs are 4.7 to 6.8 millimeters long. The species of the genus Phytocoris can be recognized by their long thighs ( femora ) of the hind legs and the long first antennae . Only Miridius quadrivirgatus also has these characteristics. Phytocoris insignis is extremely similar to Phytocoris varipes and cannot be safely separated from this species on the basis of external characteristics. Phytocoris insignis is generally a bit smaller and darker in color, with the darkest areas being deep red. The fourth segment of the antennae is shorter than that of Phytocoris varipes . The males are fully winged (macropter), the females have shortened (brachyptere) hemielytres.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is distributed in Europe from the British Isles to Siberia and further east to northern China. It is missing in Scandinavia. The species has been found sporadically in the northern German lowlands, but it is not common. There are only very few records to the south and the species is rare. In Austria it is more common in the east in dry habitats. They mainly inhabit warm and sunny habitats.

Way of life

The bugs live in northern Germany on dwarf shrubs in Calluna heaths. They can be found on common heather , heather ( Erica ) and also common broom ( Cytisus scoparius ). Where common heather is rare, the species is found on sagebrush ( Artemisia campestris ) and other dwarf shrubs. The bugs feed mostly predatory. The adult bugs appear from July to September, with one generation being formed each year.
