Hazel bud infested by the hazelnut bud gall mite

The hazelnut bud gall mite ( Phytoptus avellanae ), often also called hazel gall mite , is a gall mite from the Phytoptidae family .

features

The white colored mites, 0.2 millimeters in size, can only be seen with a magnifying glass , even in the adult stage . The body is elongated, maggot-shaped and curled secondary on both sides. Like all species of the Eriophyoidea superfamily, they only have two pairs of legs.

The larvae and nymphs are similar to the adult mites except for their size.

Occurrence

The hazelnut bud gall mite is found in Europe and North America.

Way of life

The animals induce their bile mainly in buds of Commons hazel ( Corylus avellana ), but are also of buds Gallen the hazel tree ( Corylus colurna ) and the Filbert ( Corylus maxima detected). The infestation can be recognized by clearly enlarged buds, so-called round buds, which can appear in late winter. These reach a diameter of 10 to 15 millimeters, with the tree hazel they can even be up to 30 millimeters in size. The bud leaves are often splayed, but the buds do not sprout. From the month of May they dry up.

The mites attack the fresh buds in June or July. The larvae hatch from thousands of eggs. The infestation becomes visible when the mites begin to suck the sap from the hazelnut buds. The buds enlarge and change and become the habitat for the mites in which they hibernate.

Enemies

Natural enemies of the hazelnut bud gall mites are predatory mites of the genus Kampimodromus , including Kampimodromus aberrans and Kampimodromus coryli .
