The Phytoseiidae are a family of predatory mites (Gamasida) that is distributed worldwide. Their prey consists of various plant pests such as fringed winged birds , spider mites or gall mites . Therefore they can be used for biological pest control . Their importance to agriculture has resulted in the family being well studied, unlike many other mite families.

Way of life

The majority of the species in this family are free-living, they feed predatory on insects, e.g. B. fringed winged birds, juvenile stages of other mites as well as roundworms and their eggs. Some species feed on the mycelium of mushrooms, others can only feed on bee pollen if there is a lack of animal food .
