The Pic de Montcalm is a 3077 m high peak on the French side of the Pyrenees . Since it is the highest point of the Ariège department , it is also called Toit de l'Ariège ( French : "Roof of the Ariège") in France .
The mountain belongs to the Montcalm massif , which lies on the Spanish- French border. The Montcalm is located south of the village of Auzat near Vicdessos . The mountain range also includes
- the Pica d'Estats (3143 m; Spanish also Pica d'Estats , French Pic d'Estats ), the highest point in Catalonia , as well
- the Pic Verdaguer, 3131 m
- the Pic du port de Sullo, 3072 m.
The Pic de Montcalm was first climbed on July 18, 1807 by the Swiss botanist Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle together with his local guide Simon Faure. The summit can be climbed from the French side from the Refuge du Pinet past the Pinetsee of the same name or from the Spanish side through the Ferrera valley .
