The Pic du Midi d'Ossau ( "Ossauer Mittagsspitze") is an on the French side about 10 km north of the Pyrenees main ridge isolated standing 2,884 m high mountain of volcanic origin in the southeast of the historic province of Béarn in today's department of Pyrenees-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle- Aquitaine .
location
The Pic du Midi d'Ossau is located in the municipality of Laruns in the Pyrenees National Park . The closest larger cities are Pau (approx. 40 km north) or Tarbes (approx. 68 km northeast). The pilgrimage town of Lourdes is only 50 km away.
geology
The two clearly visible mountain peaks Pic du Midi d'Ossau are only part of an approximately round volcanic massif with a clearly recognizable caldera in the center. Its formation is associated with the Variscan orogeny about 250 to 400 million years ago.
Ascent
The Pic du Midi d'Ossau was first climbed in 1552; further documented ascents followed in 1787 and 1797. Today's one-day ascents mostly start from the Cabane d'Araille mountain hut (1720 m) south of Laruns ; another hut (Refuge de Pombie) is located at 2032 m.
