The second season of the American television series Picket Fences consists of 22 episodes. It was first broadcast in the USA in 1993/94 and in Germany in 1995. For this season, the series won the Primetime Emmy Award in 1994 in the category of best drama series .

When Mayor Pugen is ambushed by an armed robber in the street and threatened with death, Pugen shoots the criminal after he had put down his weapon. Sheriff Brock has the mayor arrested against the prevailing public opinion and charged in court. Pugen did not act out of self-defense, but out of retaliation . In the trial, the new District Attorney Littleton is having some trouble with Pugen's defense attorney, Wambaugh. Littleton, however, has finally success with his charge, according Pugen vigilantism so Pugen of manslaughter is guilty committed.

Wambaugh is appealing the judgment against his client Pugen for having advised Pugen wrongly. The appeals court upheld Wambaugh's motion and overturned the judgment. In the meantime, however, Pugen is aware of his guilt for the manslaughter. Shortly after the appeal verdict, to everyone's surprise, he dies of spontaneous human self-ignition . When Maxine is under therapeutic treatment for difficulty orgasm, her therapist falls in love with her. He ends the treatment in order to be able to live the love affair with her, but is lured into a trap by Maxine and arrested for taking advantage of the doctor-patient relationship. Meanwhile, the Catholic pastor gets into a moral dilemma with regard to a religious couple who should not have sex for genetic reasons in order not to father another malformed child. Finally the couple split up, also because of the pastor's personal opinion.

Arrested as raping a woman, a school teacher turns out to be the rape victim. Littleton files charges against the woman, publicly discrediting the teacher. Rachel Harris, a businesswoman who has been appointed the new mayor, suspends the teacher from his work following a complaint from parents. The process ends in a settlement and a suspended sentence for the rapist. Meanwhile, the therapist Maxine has accused tries to convince her that he has not taken advantage of Maxine, whereupon the two make up again.

At a traffic control, Maxine lets an intoxicated driver drive on because she doesn't have far to go home. She promptly caused a serious traffic accident on this route. Wambaugh advises her to calm down with a glass of scotch before the police arrive, which the judge and prosecutor are outraged about in the ensuing trial. At Wambaugh's instigation, the accident victim agrees that the defendant will only receive a suspended sentence if he can sue the city for damages. Wambaugh is also jailed by Bone because of Bone's outrage over the deal. Meanwhile, Maxine is still under the influence of her therapist, she separates from him because he influences her too much.

A nude female photo model is out for shooting in town to promote the local dairy. After it is discovered that her husband has beaten her, Jimmy convinces her to sue her husband. She begins a romance with Jimmy, and her defense attorney, Wambaugh, reaches court to have her husband stay away from her. However, she disregards the judgment and returns to her husband, also because she considers Jimmy to be permanently unavailable. Meanwhile, Kim comes to the decision to have her breasts enlarged, and after Jill is banned, she gets the help of her birth mother Lydia. She advises Jimmy not to tell Jill about the kiss. Finally, Jill convinces Kim to wait with the procedure.

A gang of four thieves known to the FBI for a long time, led by the deaf and almost mute thief Laurie Bey and her husband Chris, raids a bank in Rome. As with every attack, she performs a short dance. By tricking the police, the gang escapes them again. In the next coup, Laurie is shot by Jimmy and then operated on by Jill and Chris. This puts Laurie and Chris in custody. When Laurie develops medical complications in the hospital, Jill calls in Chris and arranges for her to be transferred to Chicago for further treatment. When taking off, Chris confesses to Jill that the gang faked Laurie's relocation and thus helped her to freedom again.

A husband who has visual agnosia and a brain tumor shoots his brother in his home after his wife yelled at him that it was a burglar. The woman had a love affair with the man who had been shot. Sagittarius and Jill Brock are certain that because of his illness, he was unable to recognize the man as his brother. The prosecution is bringing charges of murder and manslaughter, arguing that the shooter acted in retaliation for his wife's infidelity and out of greed for the money he was entitled to after his brother's death. The trial ends with acquittals on both counts. When the shooter is operated on the brain, he brings half-awake against. Jill expresses that he was fully aware of his brother's identity in the killing shot.

After pregnant Dana fell into a coma in an accident at Christmas time, doctors find out that she couldn't possibly have had sex and that she is still a virgin . When she is about to die of pneumonia , Jill, the doctor in charge, advises Dana's father to abort the baby in order to save Dana's life. Since Dana was always against abortion , the father wants to get a court order for the abortion. Representatives of the Catholic and Protestant Churches intervene and want to prevent the abortion because the fetus could be God's Son because of Dana's virginity . Before Bone can judge, the police set up a trap for the gynecologist Danas, so that he can incriminate himself as the cause of her accident and - by injection - her pregnancy and can therefore be arrested. Against all odds, Dana wakes up from her coma.

The police raid the school and find LSD in the locker of Kim's best friend Lisa . Because of this, and because of her intention to sell it on at school, she is charged in court as a drug dealer. Jill and the two students keep the fact that Kim bought the drugs together with Lisa a secret. When Lisa is sentenced to three years in prison by Bone, Lisa is said to be picked up by the FBI to be charged with drug trafficking in a federal court, which wants to use the case to make an example, which threatens her even 10 years in prison. Littleton, the sheriff, and other police officers join forces and cooperate in ensuring that the federal court cannot succeed in prosecuting for lack of evidence. As a result, Lisa is finally set free.

Pregnant Sandy falls into a coma immediately after giving birth in the hospital. Her husband, who is just like her a Christian scientist , forbids the doctors to operate on Sandy because of his beliefs. He tries legally to obtain that the life support measures and the treatment in the hospital are broken off because this is forbidden by the faith. Finally, to Jill's dismay, Bone judges that the man's request must be obeyed. Meanwhile, to the amazement of his parents, Zachary announces that he wants to become a Jew. The community committee initially looks for the blame on Zach's schoolteacher, before it turns out that Zach's wish arose from his father's statement that there was no Santa Claus.

An older student dips Matthew upside down in the school toilet in a toilet bowl. Matthew takes revenge by firing a potato cannon on the older man's car . The car overturns and the occupant is seriously injured. Timothy, the younger brother of the injured man, takes revenge on Matthew by shooting him in the stomach in the middle of school with a killing intention and a pistol. The shooter is arrested and charged in court, while the school is raided to find weapons and Matthew is at risk of being paralyzed.

As part of a settlement, Timothy pleads guilty of attempted murder. Before Bone sentenced him to a long juvenile prison term, a controversial debate on principle broke out in court, in which Timothy's attorney Wambaugh tried to blame television depictions of violence, which were attenuating circumstances for his client. Meanwhile, Mayor Harris orders the sheriff to work, among other things, with roadblocks and the taking of the fingerprints of all residents of Rome, that the crime is stopped. Sheriff Brock refuses to carry out the order. Bone reversed the sheriff's dismissal, which Harris obtained because of it, with the request that the two should work together.

It turns out that Frank Teacher is back in Rome, called Frank the Potato Man . He is homeless and when he is expelled from the city by the police for lack of shelter, he sues the mayor with Wambaugh's help. Bone judges that the city must provide him with shelter, mainly because he is a Vietnam War veteran . Meanwhile, Howard, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, plans to donate his own heart to his terminally ill son and wants a court order to do so. In the trial, Bone hears testimony from various experts regarding Howard's health and the value of life. Bone decides against Howard's plan because he does not want to presume to sentence him to death. His son is saved anyway, with the heart of Frank, who has been found frozen to death.

It's Valentine's Day and the storyline is about three couples' relationships: Zach catches the attention of a girl of similar age. They kiss secretly in the broom closet, where he touches her chest, and Zach is suspended from class for a week for sexual harassment. Kim learns from an admirer that there are lots of sayings to be read in the boys' room that make her feel degraded as a woman. Carter Pike has a rendezvous with an attractive woman, during which he lets Maxine bug him to speak to him because of his shyness and embarrassment. When the woman finds out, she sued him for sexual harassment, but unsuccessfully.

In Rome, a 25-year-old porn video is known in which the current mayor Harris can be seen, who, among other things, campaigns for the separation of church and state in her office and thereby annoys church representatives. The two pastors of the Catholic and Protestant Churches use this opportunity to vote in the city council on whether the mayor should be removed from her office due to a lack of role model function. Opponents, including Jill, see it as a witch hunt. In addition, the love affair between Harris and the much younger Lacos is now publicly known. A majority of the city council decides that Harris can no longer serve. Howard Buss will be the new mayor - despite his Alzheimer's disease.

Jimmy's former work colleague Rick Jennings kidnaps Kim while she is on her way home and keeps her trapped in a bunker under his house. Jennings makes up against. Jimmy purposely suspicious by going to the police station and offering to help with the search. When the police unsuccessfully search for Kim, Jimmy follows the advice of psychologists to speak to Jennings, because Jennings wants to wash away the guilt Jimmy attributed to him after an earlier assignment that resulted in the loss of his family. Only when Jimmy begs Rick does he release Kim.

The obese Sophie claims to have suffocated her husband with her large body in order to get revenge for the man's insults against her because of her obesity . Based on the autopsy, Maxine doubts the statement and enforces a polygraph test before Sophie, out of shame for her obesity, admits that she accidentally suffocated her husband in his sleep. Meanwhile, Wambaugh is answerable to a Beth Din after the rabbi expelled him from his synagogue for repeating bad taste . The rabbi believes that Wambaugh promotes anti-Semitic prejudice. The arbitral tribunal believes that the rabbi should not generalize Wambaugh's behavior to the entire Jewish ethnic group and judges the expulsion to be unlawful.

A black drug dealer shoots two policemen at home and is charged with murder in Rome. His defense attorney and District Attorney Littleton are also black, while the twelve jurors are all white. Initially, they are mostly certain that the defendant should be convicted of willful murder. In the course of their deliberations, however, the predominant insight was that he acted out of self-defense. However, eleven of them decide on his guilt for having committed two murders because they see the danger of another murder through him. Sheriff Brock, the twelfth juror, objected that past acts should be judged rather than future. The jury then finally agreed that the accused of murder was innocent.

Maxine stops Jill's father Hayden for running over a stop sign, each overreacting and reproaching the other. To defuse the conflict, the Brocks invite the two to dinner together. There are numerous arguments between the four about their respective relationships, including Jimmy's fear of being abandoned by Jill.

During an extinguishing operation in the house of the Catholic priest Barrett, the police accidentally found an extensive collection of women's shoes. Barrett then admits to being a women's shoe fetishist , but does not consider himself a pervert . Shortly thereafter, however, Mayor Buss, dismayed, spreads on television that Barrett was perverted. Alzheimer's disease Buss is so disappointed in Barrett because he sees his faith shaken by his illness. Because of a breach of celibacy , the Bishop of Barrett requires that his ward be given up if Barrett fails to unite his ward behind him. Barrett then asks the congregation in his church for forgiveness for his illness, which he wants to receive psychiatric treatment. Since all the members of the community agree to him, he is allowed to keep his office.

Bobby, around 10 years old, only has a few months to live due to leukemia . His parents want to freeze him in cryonics until science is ready to cure his disease. To this end, they want, represented by Wambaugh, to obtain a court order. Opponents see the certainty that Bobby will die from freezing. The following trial will deal with the pros and cons of cryonics. Meanwhile there are discussions in Rome about the afterlife . Finally, Bone forbids freezing Bobby because he does not want to reduce the time he has left. Zack and Matthew freeze a frog in the freezer and try unsuccessfully to thaw it back to life.

Due to Alzheimer's, Howard Buss's health has deteriorated so much that he is disguised as an Indian and wearing diapers in his office and shoots bow and arrow at uninvited guests in his dementia phase. His grown children therefore see him degraded. To save him further degradation, his son Kevin shoots him with intent to kill. Surgeon Jill Brock complies with the daughter's request not to have the life-saving operation. Howard dies as a result. Kevin is charged with manslaughter in court. Sheriff Brock lies on the stand, attributing Kevin's act to his alleged insanity, and advocates tolerating his act out of compassion for Howard. The jury acquitted Kevin.
