Carter Pike is rescued from his burning house injured. At first he does not want to admit that this happened because of a suicide attempt. Only against He admits to Judge Bone that he attempted suicide out of desperation over his still single status. Kim announces to her parents and Wambaugh to their surprise that she doesn't want to be a lawyer but a surgeon. Sheriff Brock rebelled against the mayor's plans to change the uniforms of police officers.

A tornado is approaching Rome. In the storm, Zack drives to his sister to warn her about it. However, this worries his parents. Meanwhile, Maxine is undercover investigating a prostitute with whom Kenny is secretly in love. Carter also meets a sewing machine saleswoman and has self-doubt when she is interested in him.

Dr. Joey Diamond, who appears as a doctor on television and runs the health care company OmegaCare, tries to persuade Jill to move from self-employment to OmegaCare. To force this and to put Jill under pressure as a tenant, Joey buys the house in which Jill's practice is, and threatens her with not extending the lease. Although Jill is initially against the change, she makes friends with the idea in view of her work overload due to her independence and finally receives Joey's agreement to run OmegaCare together in the future. Meanwhile, Wambaugh's wife divorced him because he had not fulfilled his marital duties for years. Wambaugh then tries to lure her back to him while singing.

One of two prisoners who escaped from prison is John Littleton's half-brother Dale, a convicted murderer. Dale hides in John's house while the police look for the two who fled. When Dale's escape companion Quince appears to them, an argument breaks out in which John is shot. When Quince and Dale try to escape, they are shot by the police. Meanwhile, Matthew's negligence contributes to a house fire.

An angry actor disguised as a hot dog threatens Maxine with a supposed stick. She therefore shoots at him in self-defense and injures him. The actor sees himself damaged and with Dell's help is suing the police and the city of Rome for damages. Both Wambaugh as defense attorney and Dell argue in court with the actor's and Maxine's previous lack of control. In contrast to the actor, Maxine maintains control on the stand. She is acquitted by the jury.

A Saturday evening is about the experiences of several main characters. Matthew wants to pick up an older friend's girlfriend, who prefers to spend the evening with Matthew instead of his boyfriend. Bone and Wambaugh experience the sudden death of a member of their poker game and then head out into the nightlife. Jill and Joey help Jimmy after Jimmy gets trapped in his private parts.

The sheriff is rehearsing a polka dance with the mayor . After all, they do this to raise money for a school's PC equipment. Meanwhile, Jill wants to be sterilized for the purpose of contraception . In the run-up to the operation, she becomes moody at work and unsure of her intention. At the same time, Littleton gives up his job as a prosecutor in Rome. As a result of his brother's death, he moves back to his home town of Chicago , where he wants to provide legal advice to the socially disadvantaged in a community center.

The annual pig wrestling is to take place in Rome for charity purposes. An animal welfare group, to which Kim belongs, protested publicly in the run-up to the event. Assuming that he is serving animal welfare, Kim helps the group, including by placing an explosive device in the pig paddock. After she was discovered in the process, she learns from the leader of the group that it was not primarily about animal welfare, but about making the group known.

Pope John Paul II visits Rome. While he was in a parade of honor in the streets of Rome in a popemobile, a homosexual bystander died from a headshot. Ben Speers, the man's life partner, then claims that his companion took his own life. The day after the death, the Pope reports to the police and claims that he saw Speers shoot the man. There is a murder trial in Rome in which the Pope acts as the main witness for the prosecution, against Speers. Speers' defense attorney Wambaugh tries to cast doubt on the Pope's credibility by using the Catholic Church's aversion to homosexuality and thus the Pope's bias as arguments. In contrast, the prosecutor argues that homosexuality does not play a role in the credibility of the witness. The jury eventually found the defendants guilty. Judge Bone ends his friendship with Wambaugh because he insulted the Pope.

The skeletonized body of the German Nazi supporter Gustav Braun is found in a forest near Rome . Carter determines that the deceased was murdered with a butcher's knife decades ago. The accused are the Jewish butcher's son Jacob Levine, whose father was murdered by Braun during the Second World War and who acted out of revenge. Douglas Wambaugh's son David will be charged. Douglas, whose parents were once gassed by the Nazis, is bitterly disappointed that his son, of all people, is the prosecuting prosecutor in this case. Several neo-Nazis demonstrated against the accused during the trial . Extremist Jews also demonstrate against the charges and injure David, whereupon he begins to reconcile with his father. A stone with a swastika on it flies through Wambaugh's office window. Levine indicates indicates opposite. His long-time friend Douglas clearly stated that he was indeed Braun's killer, but the jury acquitted him for lack of evidence. Leaving the courtroom, he suffers a fatal heart attack, and a fight breaks out between neo-Nazis and Jews.

After Matthew unplanned sees the body of a school friend, a teacher sees the relationship between him and his father disturbed. So Jimmy goes on a camping trip with his son. But this unexpectedly turns into a bear hunt. Meanwhile, Kenny helps the pregnant mayor take a childbirth class. Kim also lets Carter teach Kim by doing an autopsy on a dead bird.

Zachary is reprimanded by the school principal after a nude video of his teacher was found on his school PC. When the video even hits the internet unplanned, the teacher's reputation is ruined, so that she sued the parents of Zachary and his friend for a six-figure sum in damages. After Zachary apologized to the woman, she significantly reduced her demand. Maxine is shocked when a man she recently met online turns out to be a transvestite . That's why she ends the relationship again.

On the occasion of Zachary's birthday, Wambaugh, Bone, Maxine and Kenny are visiting the Brock's house. Jill acts very strangely and leads the others to believe that she is going through menopause. Jill is replacing the job of coaching Zachary's school basketball team. Mayor Bey has delegated her post to Maxine Stewart because of her maternity leave. Maxine's vote on the city council is crucial for the city's decision to approve the construction of a large shopping center, which is threatening the very existence of many small traders. The popular radio presenter Chuck Dante heats up the mood against Maxine and the city council resolution with misogynistic inflammatory slogans. Against this background, the mentally unstable shopkeeper Stubby Muller, a supporter of Dante, shoots Maxine, seriously injuring her. In the following trial against Muller for attempted murder, his defense attorney Wambaugh argued that Dante had had a negative impact on his client, so the jury acquitted him. Bone, however, is disappointed with the verdict, finds Muller insane and confines him to a closed psychiatry for life. Dante is fired after a citizens' initiative against himself.

Douglas Wambaugh is about to discuss the impending divorce with his wife Miriam when their new lover Hal appears. Douglas soon suspects him of cheating Miriam and her bridge club colleagues financially, and hunts him. It turns out that Hal belongs to a gang of criminals, with whose help he against. the police and Miriam temporarily faked his death. After Carter also found out the faked death, the police can save the Wambaughs before they would have been shot by the criminals.

The sex offender Eugene Stoltz rapes the Amish girl Hannah and is therefore arrested. Because of her religious belief that forgiveness instead of retribution counts, Hannah refuses to testify against Stoltz. Therefore, the police have no action against Stoltz and reluctantly have to release him. Stoltz promptly raped another girl, Peggy Patterson. Peggy's father is suing Hannah and the Amish Council of Elders for pain and suffering because Hannah was responsible for Peggy's rape for failing to testify. The lawsuit is unsuccessful, the jury decides in favor of the Amish and thus for their right to act according to their religion. As the Amish leave the courthouse, Kenny shoots Stoltz, who fled the police, in front of the Amish.

After a faint attack, Sheriff Brock learns that he may have cancer. While waiting for the final diagnosis, he leads the investigation into a case in which a homeless war veteran was killed. The suspect Jack can seize the sheriff's weapon during his interrogation in the police station and take him hostage. Jack admits that he killed the veteran in self-defense when he threatened his friend. The hostage-taking ends bloodlessly and the sheriff learns that his tumor is benign.

At the christening of Laurie Bey's newborn baby, to the surprise of Pastor Nowotny and the audience, she announced that she had carried the boy as a surrogate mother on behalf of a gay couple, including Laurie's brother. Laurie's mother, who has estranged herself from her children years ago, is against homosexual parents and therefore tries legally to claim custody of the child for herself. In the process, everything revolves around the question of whether the homosexuality of the potential parents could affect the child's development. Bone sees no reason for this and rejects the lawsuit.

The bones of three corpses are found in a garden plot in Rome. Wambaugh can quickly prove that his client Selma, who is accused of murder, is not responsible for the deaths.
