The Piedra del Águila dam (Spanish: Embalse Piedra del Águila, translated: “Eagle's Stone”) is the second of five dams on the Limay River in the northwest of the Comahue region in Patagonia in Argentina . It lies below the confluence of the Rio Collón Curá with the Limay in the provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro . The dam is used to generate electricity and regulate floods.

construction

Construction began in March 1985. In January 1987 the Limay was diverted into a canal. The dam was inaugurated in 1993.

Reservoir

The water surface of the reservoir is 292 km² or 305 km². According to various sources, the storage capacity is 11,300, 12,400 or 12,600 million cubic meters. With the two largest numbers this results in an average water depth of 12,600 / 305 = 41.3 m. The greatest depth is 120 m.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a 170 m high concrete gravity dam . It is 820 m long at the top of the wall. According to various sources, the wall volume is 2.78, 3.6 or 3.8 million m³.

Hydroelectric power plant

The hydropower plant works with four Francis turbines of 350 MW each, a total of 1400 MW. This generates 5,000 GWh of electricity annually .
