The Pichi Picún Leufú dam ( Spanish Represa Pichi Picún Leufú ) is a dam with a hydroelectric power station in Argentina . It dams the Río Limay , which forms the border between the provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro , into a reservoir. The Piedra del Águila dam is about 20 km upstream.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a concrete gravity dam (machine house and weir system ) on the right-hand side as well as a rubble dam that is connected to the left-hand side. The height of the structure is a maximum of 45 m, the total length of the structure is 1045 m. The width of the dam is 10 m at the crown. The crown of the building is at a height of 482.7 m above sea level . 1.35 (or 1.562) million m³ of bulk material and 27,500 m³ of concrete were used for the barrier structure. A maximum of 10,500 m³ / s can be discharged via the weir system.

Reservoir

The normal destination is between 477 and 479 m. When the reservoir is fully blocked, it extends over an area of around 19 km² and holds 197 million m³ of water - 35 million m³ of this can be used to generate electricity. The maximum storage destination is 480.2 m.

power plant

The power plant went into operation in 1999. The installed capacity is 250 (or 261 or 285) MW . The average annual generation is given as 973 (or 1050 or 1080) million  kWh . Annual generation fluctuates: in 2016 it was 494 million kWh and in 2006 it was 1,430 million kWh.

The 3 Kaplan turbines each produce a maximum of 87 MW and the generators each 90  MVA . The nominal speed of the turbines is 83.33 min −1 . The fall height is between 18 and 24 m. The nominal voltage of the generators is 13.8  kV , their nominal current 3.8  kA . In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 13.8 kV to 500 kV using power transformers.

The power plant is operated by Hidroeléctrica Pichi Picún Leufú , a subsidiary of Pampa Energía .
