Pierre Georges Marie de Barrigue de Montvallon , known as Piem (born November 12, 1923 in Saint-Étienne ; † November 12, 2020 in Notre-Dame-d'Oé ), was a French caricaturist and illustrator as well as the author and creator of short films .

Life

Pierre de Barrigue de Montvallon came from an old family of the Catholic nobility from Aix-en-Provence and was the third of five children of Serge de Montvallon, director of the Paris conference center Maison de la Chimie , and his wife Madeleine Champavère. His brother is the writer and journalist Robert de Montvallon . Pierre de Montvallon was married from 1947 to the industrial daughter Élisabeth Lefebvre; the marriage has seven children.

In the war years 1940 to 1944 he studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris and as a master student with the graphic artist and poster artist Paul Colin . During this time he took part in youth movements and was an activist for the Jeunesse Étudiante Chrétienne (JEC).

He became known as a draftsman for the daily Le Figaro , the socialist weekly L'Unité and the Catholic daily La Croix, among others . He also wrote many humor books. In 1987 he was engaged by presenter Jacques Bofford at Radio Suisse Romande . He later appeared as a comedian with Juliette Gréco and Fernand Raynaud with his comments on current news in Parisian cabarets such as La Tête de L'Art . In 1975/76 he became known with his appearances ("La Petite Semaine de Piem") in the evening show Le Petit Rapporteur by Jacques Martin in TF1 .

In 2006 he retired to his house in La Noue near Notre-Dame-d'Oé near Tours , where he was active as a city ​​councilor , among other things . Even in retirement, he continued to draw and write every day. As an amateur, he shot around fifteen short films in his neighborhood in Paris or La Noue and won awards with them. Piem died on November 12, 2020, his 97th birthday.

He has been honored several times, such as the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Commandeur) in 2006 .
