Pierce Adolphus ("Paddy") Simpson (born March 1, 1837 in Ireland; † August 11, 1900 ) was a doctor and Regius Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of Glasgow .

Life

Simpson was born in Ireland to the lawyer Robert Simpson. He studied mathematics at the University of Cambridge , where he graduated with an MA. He qualified as a Doctor in Edinburgh, MD (1861), and moved to Glasgow in the 1860s, where he opened a practice. In 1866 he was appointed Professor of Medical Jurisprudence at Anderson's College and taught there until he was appointed to the Regius Professorship in 1872 to succeed Harry Rainy . In addition, he was a doctor in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and from 1864 to 1868 an editor of the Glasgow Medical Journal.

Simpson took on the role of editor of the Glasgow Medical Journal in April 1864 and, despite his various duties as a doctor, professor and in various other roles, ran the journal alone until April 1868. In the last two years of his leadership the magazine was published monthly for the first time, but at the same time seems to have been existentially threatened despite a select selection of authors. Criticism was leveled at a lack of topical issues and the same style. Following a merger in 1956 with the Edinburgh Medical Journal, the journal is continued as the Scottish Medical Journal .

In 1875 Simpson married Frances Adelaide Leister. In 1898 he withdrew from the professorship. After 26 years in office, a critic, Professor John Lenihan, describes Simpson's contributions to forensics as nonexistent. Critics also confirm that his successor, John Glaister , is significantly more committed. Other voices refer to Simpson as an important teacher and skilled botanist.
