Piero Marrazzo (born July 29, 1958 in Rome ) is an Italian journalist and former politician of the Partito Democratico . He was President of the Lazio Region from 2005 to 2009 .

Life

He is the son of Luigia Spina and Giuseppe Marrazzo , a journalist who made a name for himself through his reports and investigations into the Mafia .

After studying law, he began his professional career at the Italian public broadcaster RAI . There he initially worked in various functions, including as spokesman and correspondent for the news program on Rai Due . With the moderation of the weekly consumer protection program Mi manda Raitre ("Mich schickt Rai Tre") broadcast on Rai Tre between 1997 and 2004 Piero Marrazzo reached his journalistic climax. The show reached over five million viewers at times (19% audience rating).

In 2004 he left his job to apply for the post of regional president for the center-left alliance L'Unione in Lazio . In April 2005 he was elected with 50.7% of the vote. In connection with this election there was a scandal ("Laziogate"), because Marrazzo's phone was tapped without authorization. The traces finally pointed to his predecessor in the office of regional president, Francesco Storace , who, promoted to health minister in the Italian government, now also lost this office.

Withdrawal from politics

As part of a sex and drug scandal that became public at the end of October 2009, he resigned from his office as regional president in the same month and announced that he would leave politics. The political scandal known in the media as the "Marrazzo Case" (or Caso Marrazzo in Italian ) had its origin in a video made on July 3, 2009, in which Marrazzo was seen together with a transsexual prostitute in their apartment. You could also see cocaine that was in the prostitute's apartment. The video was subsequently used as a means of extortion against Marrazzo by four carabinieri arrested in the course of the investigation. It is unclear whether the video was recorded by the four carabinieri or by a drug dealer and acquaintance of the prostitute who was present there. The drug dealer involved was found dead in a hotel room on September 12, 2009 with a heroin overdose. On November 20, 2009, another transsexual prostitute implicated in the case was killed in an unexplained apartment fire. Evidence also disappeared in both cases.

Piero Marrazzo is married to the television journalist Roberta Serdoz and has three daughters.
