Barbara Novak (born December 14, 1976 in Vienna ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and since February 19, 2018, state party secretary of the SPÖ Vienna . She has been a member of the state parliament since 2001 and a member of the Vienna City Council and spokesperson for information and communication technology and digitization policy.

education and profession

Barbara Novak attended the elementary school in Zeltgasse ( Josefstadt ) and, from 1987, the high school in Billrothstraße in Döbling . In 1991 she moved to the Higher Federal College for Culture and Tourism in Hietzing , where she was head of the school from 1992 to 1995. From 1993 to 1995 Novak was also the state school spokeswoman for the vocational high and middle schools (BHMS) in Vienna. During her schooldays she was involved in the union of private employees (GPA) and between 1995 and 1997 she was chairwoman of the students of the federal GPA and from 1996 to 2000 she was the federal chairwoman of the GPA youth and deputy chairwoman of the Austrian youth union.

After graduating from high school in 1996, she began studying history and political science , which she stopped in 1998. From 2001 to 2004 she studied sociology at the University of Vienna . She completed her bachelor's degree in sociology at the University of Vienna in February 2017.

During her school days, Barbara Novak worked as an intern in the hotel industry and in the secretariat. From 1996 to 1997 she worked as a freelancer in a call center and from 1997 to 2001 she worked for the SPÖ regional organization in Vienna. From 1997 to 1999 she headed the Young Generation Vienna as state secretary and was then responsible for marketing, merchandising and project management in the SPÖ Vienna.

From 2008 to January 2010 Barbara Novak worked as a freelance IT and PR consultant. Until the end of 2011 she worked as an employed consultant in a management consultancy. She dealt with organizational structures and organizational developments, strategic corporate goals, social media strategies and communication. From February 2016 to May 2016 she works as a specialist for digitization in the office of State Secretary Mag.a Sonja Steßl .

Novak was already involved in the student council and the union during her school days. From 1997 to 1999 she was promoted to deputy chairwoman of the Austrian Youth Union and from 1998 to 2002 she was chairwoman of the Austrian GPA youth. She has been Deputy Section Chairwoman of Döbling since 1998 and a member of the District Women's Committee and was elected to the board of the SPÖ Döbling in 2002. Within the party, she has also held the position of chairwoman of the SPÖ women in Döbling since 2010 and has been chairwoman of the SPÖ district organization in Döbling since March 14, 2015, making her the first woman to hold this position.

Novak has represented the SPÖ in the Vienna Landtag and municipal council since April 27, 2001 and is currently a member of the Housing and Urban Renewal Committee, the Health and Social Committee and the City Audit Office's committee. She has been the spokesperson for information and communication technology ICT since 2005 and oversees projects such as the expansion of broadband in Vienna and the further development of the city of Vienna's eGovernment offer. In addition, she was a member of the board of the Austrian Institute for Youth Research and, between 2000 and 2002, chamber councilor of the Vienna Chamber of Labor and Employees . She has been President of the Institute for Youth Literature in Vienna since October 2015 and has been Deputy Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Volkshilfe Vienna Employment GesmbH since January 2016. Since 2009 she has also been the Vice President of the Board of Trustees of Viennese retirement homes and houses for living.

In February 2018 she was proposed by state party leader Michael Ludwig as Vienna state party secretary, Ludwig's proposal was unanimously accepted by the SPÖ presidium. She succeeded Sybille Straubinger .

In December 2018, following criticism from the Court of Auditors, it became known that the "Wiener Kinder- und Jugendbetreuung" association, financed by the City of Vienna with EUR 40 million, was paying excessively high salaries and special payments, some to people close to the SPÖ. After Novak had initially sharply condemned the events in the club, it was announced that she had been deputy chairwoman there between June 2005 and June 2011.
