Piero di Cosimo de 'Medici (also Piero il Gottoso ("the gouty") called; * 1416 in Florence , † December 2, 1469 there ) was the eldest son of Cosimo de' Medici and between 1464 and 1469 the leading politician in Florence . His sons and successors were Lorenzo il Magnifico and Giuliano di Piero de 'Medici . From 1444 he was married to Lucrezia Tornabuoni . They had four other children, two of whom died very early.

Piero received a humanistic education from his father Cosimo, but he also retained medieval, primarily knightly ways of thinking that he had acquired while dealing with Burgundian business friends . Like his father and later his son, Piero had no de jure authority in Florence. However, his wealth, patronage and following made him de facto the leading citizen of the city. The hardest probation he had to pass in 1465/66, when dissidents around Luca Pitti tried to usurp the leadership after the death of his father. The close alliance with the Sforza of Milan , which had already been established under Cosimo, was a major contributor to rescue and maintaining power .

Piero was an avid collector of valuable books. He suffered from a gout-like illness all his life so that he could no longer move pain-free, especially towards the end of his life. Therefore, from 1467 at the latest, his son Lorenzo, who was then only 18 years old, took over the management of the family and town. Piero died in 1469.
