youth

Pierre-Antoine Antonelle was born in 1747 to a wealthy family in the city of Arles in the south of France. Since his father died that same year, Antonelle was raised by a relative, the Archbishop of Angoulême . Presumably a strict upbringing shaped his anti-church attitude, which he later adopted during the revolution. In 1762 he joined the military as a teenager. In 1782, however, he resigned from the army.

Political career

It was during a stay in Paris that Antonelle came into contact with Enlightenment ideas . He became known through a book publication in 1788. With the outbreak of the French Revolution , he shared its goals. On February 15, 1790 he took office as the first elected mayor of the city of Arles, which he held until September 1791. He then began his work as a member of the National Assembly . In Paris, he became chairman of the Jacobins, but missed out on becoming mayor of the French capital. As a member of the Revolutionary Tribunal , he refused to convict Girondins . He was then taken prisoner and was not released until the Thermidorian reaction in July 1794. From 1796 Antonelle was a member of the conspiracy of equals , a little later he narrowly escaped imminent arrest. He was later re-elected to the National Assembly, which, however, did not come into being. Antonelle's political career was over at this point and he had to flee to Charente-Inférieure .

After his career he also lived in Italy for some time. Finally he returned to his homeland, to Arles. Pierre-Antoine Antonelle died there on November 26, 1817.
