Pierre-Yves Simonin

Pierre-Yves Simonin (born August 15, 1937 in Bern ) is a former Swiss diplomat .

Life

Simonin is the son of the ministerial official Pierre Simonin, who was section head in the Department of Economic Affairs between 1942 and 1950 , and a grandson of the politician Henri Simonin , who was a member of the National Council and the Bernese government council .

He himself entered the diplomatic service in 1964 and was, among other things, embassy secretary at the embassy in Brazil between 1969 and June 1970 and then, from 1970 to 1975, secretary to the foreign minister, the head of the political department Pierre Graber .

From 1975 until 1979, Simonin was a member of staff (cultural council) at the embassy in Italy and then first staff member (with a ministerial title) at the embassy in the USA. He was then appointed ambassador and, on September 1, 1983, succeeded Ernest Bauermeister as ambassador to Israel . He held this post until June 30, 1987 and was then replaced by Jean-Pierre Keusch . He then took over the post of Ambassador to Yugoslavia from Alfred Hohl on October 1, 1987, and remained there until December 31, 1989, when Jean-Jacques Indermühle succeeded him. After other assignments in Bern (Deputy Political Director of the FDFA), he succeeded Gaspard Bodmer as Ambassador in Belgium on August 2, 1993 . He held this office until August 31, 1999 and was then replaced by Robert Mayor . At the same time, he had been accredited to NATO as Head of the Swiss Mission since October 29, 1997 .

From 1999 to 2005 Simonin represented the Sovereign Order of Malta at the UN in Geneva as ambassador and permanent observer.
