Pierre Étienne Bézier [ be'zje ] (born September 1, 1910 in Paris , † November 25, 1999 ) was a French engineer . He was a graduate of Arts et Métiers ParisTech .

In the 1960s he described the Bézier curve , which was used by Renault, his employer at the time, to design body shapes and which later became an elementary CGI tool for NURBS .

He started working for Renault in 1933 and stayed there for 42 years. In 1960 he began to work on the CAD / CAM program UNISURF , which was first used in 1968. UNISURF has been in full use since 1975. In 1977 he received a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Sorbonne .

The Bézier curve has proven to be an extremely useful method for describing curves in computer programs. Bézier curves are built up from relatively few "nodes" in which the type of node, for example symmetrical or pointed, as well as the direction and "directional intensity" of the branching lines are specified as "additional information".
