Pierre Donzelague (born March 23, 1668 in Aix-en-Provence , † June 16, 1747 in Lyon ) was a French harpsichord maker .

Life

Pierre Donzelague was born in Aix-en-Provence to François Donzelague . His father was also a well-known harpsichord maker who came from Bruges and had moved to Aix-en-Provence. Pierre Donzelague completed his training in his workshop. He then moved to Lyon in 1688 and opened his own workshop there. He also played the cello and viola da gamba and sang at the Lyon Opera.

Donzelague died on June 16, 1747. A final mention of Pierre Donzelague can be found in the sales offer for several harpsichords from 1750.

Preserved instruments

Seven instruments are attributed to Donzelague. Two are certainly assigned to him. One, built in 1711, is privately owned, the other from 1716 is in the Musée des Tissus in Lyon. It has been copied many times and has two manuals .

He was one of the early instrument makers whose instruments spanned a full five octaves. The scope ranges from FF to f '' '. His preserved instruments are similar in appearance and construction. They are all of the large size that later became common. They show a Flemish influence, as do the instruments used by the Ruckers in Antwerp. This is likely to go back to the training by his father from Flanders.
