Pierre Gauchat

Pierre Gauchat (born January 5, 1902 in Zurich , † February 26, 1956 in Cairo ) was a Swiss graphic artist and painter .

Life

Pierre Gauchat was the son of a lecturer from Neuchâtel who taught at the University of Zurich. In Zurich he attended the Zurich School of Applied Arts between 1916 and 1920, where Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke was head of the graphics class at the time and, under the direction of Ehmcke's successor Ernst Keller (1891–1968), Gauchat graduated from the graphics class. In the summer of 1922 Gauchat joined Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke at the Munich School of Applied Arts as a student . He was lifelong friends with Ehmcke.

From 1924 Gauchat owned his own studio in Küsnacht and worked as a freelance graphic artist and painter. Between 1925 and 1943 he was a freehand drawing teacher at the Zurich School of Applied Arts. He then taught drawing at the cantonal high school in Zurich until 1950.

Gauchat was on the board of the Swiss Werkbund and the Association of Swiss Graphic Artists.

Pierre Gauchat died of a stroke on February 26, 1956 in Cairo, in his adopted country of Egypt.

Creation and works

Pierre Gauchat was considered a versatile graphic artist, so he could not be assigned to any style. He was considered a doer for whom the satisfaction of the customer came first. He illustrated books, designed posters, stamps, etc. a. for the 25th anniversary of Swissair , banknotes and stage sets. He designed the 50 to 1000 franc notes of the fifth series of the Swiss franc.

In the theater sector he was best known for his designs for puppets for the marionette theater in Zurich.

For fifteen years he designed the magazine for the Swiss homeland security . He was awarded the bronze medal at the Triennale in Milan in 1936 for the design of the stage set and costumes for Othmar Schoeck's "Venus" (competition of the Zurich City Theater), which was made in 1932 but not carried out. In Helwan , Gauchat had carpets made according to his designs.
