The Pierre Levée at Yzeures-sur-Creuse

The Dolmen de la Pierre Levée (German: raised rock ) is a Neolithic megalithic complex about 2.5 km southwest of the small town of Yzeures-sur-Creuse in the Indre-et-Loire department in Touraine in France . It is not registered as a monument historique . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

location

The dolmen stands immediately north of a farm road in a narrow strip of forest between two former gravel pits that have been filled with water, about 500 m west-southwest of the hamlet of Confluent, which belongs to Yzeures-sur-Creuse .

description

The complex, which is only partially available today, was built between 4000 and 3500 BC. Built in BC. Until the middle of the 20th century, it was considered the most beautiful dolmen in the Indre-et-Loire department. The dolmen consists of a large, only slightly hewn cover plate made of coarse millstone grit, turonium - limestone , sandstone and granite 4.2 m long, 3.0 m wide, 60–70 cm thick and a total of 23 m Circumference that only rests on the east side on a 1.40 m long and 75 cm high limestone orthostat . In 1854 the cover plate was still on four large bearing stones, but three of them have collapsed and lie as fragments next to or under the cover plate. During excavations, the remains of human skeletons were found in the chamber.

The approximately 35 m long semicircle of more than a dozen 50–60 cm high stone blocks (peristaliths) at a distance of 3–4 m around the south and west side of the dolmen is remarkable. This stone circle ( cromlech ), uncovered during road construction work in recent times, once formed the outer edge of a disappeared tumulus . On the northeast side there is only a single block of the original stone ring.
