Pierre Macherey

Pierre Macherey (* 1938 in Belfort ) is a French philosopher and student of Louis Althusser .

life and work

Macherey is the author of a post-doctoral thesis entitled: "A quoi pense la littérature?" (1991) ("What does literature think of?"). But he is best known as the author of a monumental and essential commentary on ethics by Baruch de Spinoza . This five-volume work attempts to scrutinize Spinoza's opus magnum from a systematic point of view. This systematic interpretation is not so far removed from Martial Gueroult's commentary on the same book, even if the individual interpretations of these two authors differ significantly.

Alongside Gueroult, Mathéron, Gilles Deleuze , Étienne Balibar , Misrahi and Sylvain Zac, Macherey is one of the many French philosophers who renewed the understanding of Spinoza's work.

Macherey is a professor emeritus at the University of Lille .
