Martial Gueroult

Martial Gueroult (born December 15, 1891 in Le Havre , † August 13, 1976 in Paris ) was a French philosopher , philosophy historian and university lecturer .

After working at the University of Strasbourg and the University of Clermont-Ferrand , Martial Gueroult took over the Chair of Philosophy at the University of Paris Sorbonne in 1945, succeeding Léon Brunschvicg . In 1951 he was appointed to the Collège de France , where he took over the chair from Étienne Gilson , whose field he renamed “Histoire et technologie des systèmes philosophiques”. In 1957 Gueroult was appointed a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques .

Gueroult emerged primarily as a specialist in the history of philosophy in the 17th and 18th centuries. He has published numerous studies on thinkers such as René Descartes , Nicolas Malebranche , Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , Baruch de Spinoza and Johann Gottlieb Fichte . He presented his theory of the history of philosophy in the unfinished work entitled Dianoématique .
