Pierre Overney ( 1948 - February 25, 1972 ) was a French worker and Maoist who was shot by the Renault factory police in Billancourt .

Circumstances of death

About a year after Renault sacked Pierre Overney, on February 25, at the end of the morning shift on avenue Émile-Zola in front of the Billancourt factory, he was handing out leaflets with a dozen other Maoists of the Gauche prolétarienne for a demonstration to commemorate the metro station massacre Charonne . When the Maoists, some of them armed with poles or clubs, stepped a few meters through the factory gate, they were stopped by several factory police officers.

At 2:30 p.m., without any previous violence and without being directly threatened, the chief of the works police, Jean-Antoine Tramoni, killed Overney with a pistol shot in the chest. The events were documented by the present journalist Claude-François Jullien from the Nouvel Observateur and photographed by Christophe Schimmel from the Agence de presse Liberation (APL) .

Overney's grave is in the Père Lachaise cemetery (59th Division).

aftermath

Overney's violent death resulted in a demonstration of over 120,000 people through Paris . There was no further political or social impact because the dominant union at the Renault plant , the CGT , which at the time was close to the French Communist Party , which was working towards a parliamentary success , did not join the protests. This development was partially received as a visible end point of the 1968 movement .

Jean-Antoine Tramoni, who shot Overney, was murdered on March 23, 1977 by the Noyaux armés pour l'autonomie populaire (NAPAP).

On November 17, 1986, a "Pierre Overney command" from Action Directe shot and killed the director of the Renault works, Georges Besse, on his doorstep.
