Pomme is considered a forerunner of psychiatry. Two years after Joseph Raulin (1708–1748) he dealt with the “vapeurs” (steaming). In medicine, which at that time was oriented towards humoral pathology , these were considered to be the constitution of diseases. However, the fumes were later attributed to the nervous system. In contrast to his predecessor Raulin, Pomme took the view that those who suffer from “vapeurs” are not just women. The cause of the suffering is the dehydration and hardening of the nerves ("racornissement des nerfs"). However, this view was determined by humoral pathology. The work achieved a certain level of awareness because it was published several times and also translated abroad. Pomme has made a name for itself mainly by working with Thomas Sydenham , George Cheyne , Robert Whytt and others. a. described the symptoms of hysteria and hypochondria .
