François Ledermann

François Ledermann (born January 1, 1949 in Bern ) is a Swiss pharmacist and pharmacy historian .

Life

First Ledermann attended schools in Bern. In 1965 he switched to the grammar school in Neuchâtel , where he obtained the federal Matura type B four years later . He then studied pharmacy at the University of Bern . He completed his studies in 1975 with a pharmacy diploma. He then studied pharmacy history. He then went to the Université René-Descartes in Paris , where he carried out studies for his dissertation in the field of pharmaceutical history. In 1978 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the history of pharmaceuticals. In 1988, Ledermann qualified as a professor for the history of medicine and pharmacy at the University of Bern. Seven years later he was appointed adjunct professor.

In 1981 he was elected secretary of the Swiss Society for the History of Pharmacy. Seven years later he became president of this society until 1998. Ledermann has been a member of the medical council of the Canton of Bern since 1996. In 2000 Ledermann was elected President of the International Society for the History of Pharmacy. Since 2006 he has been at the head of this society again.

In addition to the history of pharmaceuticals and drugs, Ledermann dealt with drug prices and the history of the pharmacist's mentality and also examined the cultural-historical references to pharmacy. He is also head of the Bern Castle Pharmacy. Today Ledermann works at the Medical History Institute of the University of Bern, where he supervises medical history dissertations. Furthermore, he is a corresponding or honorary member of numerous pharmaceutical historical societies in France , Spain , Italy , Benelux , Romania and the German Society for the History of Pharmacy. Ledermann has been a member of the jury for the Médaille Parmentier and the Schelenz plaque since 2015.

Ledermann published numerous publications on the development of pharmacy in Switzerland and on pharmaceutical cultural history. Over 170 scientific articles have already appeared in Switzerland, Germany and France.

Ledermann is married and has two daughters.
