Pierre couverte du Moulin de Piau

The Pierre Couverte du Moulin de Piau or Dolmen de la Motte is located in the forest near the hamlet of La Gaignadiére , east of Chemellier near Angers in the Maine-et-Loire department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

description

The dolmen at the mill of Piau, known as "Pierre couverte" ( German  Covered Stone ), consists of up to 4.2 m long and about 2.0 m high side stones and the two parts of a broken capstone. It is a typical rectangular "Dolmen angevin" with a chamber about 4.0 by 3.0 m. The access is to the east, but it is broken and largely non-existent above ground. The rear stone has also fallen, so that the cap stone, broken in two, only rests on the large side plates. Like other megalithic systems , it is said to have been covered with a mound of earth or stones.

The dolmen was likely the tomb of an important person as eleven sharpened axes were found in it, including one made of flint .

Nearby are the heavily disturbed dolmen de la Pauvrière , the dolmen of Caillère and two burial grounds , one with burned bones and the other with pits in the shape of a body.
