Pierre de La Gorce

Pierre de La Gorce (born June 29, 1846 in Vannes , † January 2, 1934 ) was a French historian .

Life

La Gorces father was a soldier of the Restoration and the July Monarchy . Since her mother died early, La Groce grew up with an aunt in Maubeuge . He studied at a college in Douai , but then turned on the advice of his father and began studying law, which he completed in 1870. He was first deputy judge and then substitute judge and worked in Rocroi , Montreuil , Béthune and Saint-Omer . In 1880 he resigned because, as a staunch Catholic, he did not want to take part in the implementation of the decrees of the government of Jules Ferry , which provided for a reduction in the influence of religious orders on education and society. From then on he devoted himself entirely to the history of France and wrote numerous important works.

Pierre de la Gorce was elected to the Académie des sciences morales et politiques in 1907 and to the Académie française in 1914 .
